NISRA has published an information paper outlining how alcohol-specific death statistics are collected and published in Northern Ireland. ‘Alcohol-Specific Deaths’ includes conditions known to be exclusively caused by alcohol (that is, wholly attributable causes) and excludes conditions where only a proportion of the deaths are caused by alcohol (that is, partially attributable causes). The Department of Health, NI (DoH) use alcohol-specific death statistics to inform policy and monitor the strategy: New Strategic Direction for Alcohol and Drugs – Phase 2, the aim of which is to reduce the level of alcohol and drug related harm in Northern Ireland.
